IMPORTANT NOTICE – I&I INFLO – SUMP PUMP

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Each year millions of gallons of rain water are improperly drained into the sanitary sewer system. This is caused by sump pumps, floor drains and roof leader drains. One sump pump can discharge water into the sewer system at a rate equal to the normal flow from 200 homes. This is contributing to overloading the sanitary sewer system, which may cause backups into Hillsborough resident’s basements.

This inflow of clean water into the system is costing the Hillsborough MUA hundreds of thousands of dollars every year and these costs must be passed on to our customers as increased service charges. Besides the unnecessary costs to the authority and its customers, these connections are “ILLEGAL”.

The MUA will be conducting inspections of the sewer system by using a CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) camera. If the authority suspects that there are illegal connections of sump pumps, floor drains or roof leader drains the homeowner will receive a letter stating the findings. The homeowner will have 30 days to remove any illegal connection or be issued a fine. The fine for illegal connections or improper use of the sanitary sewer system is $100 per day for each violation.

If you are not sure whether you have any illegal connections the MUA will gladly inspect your premises at no charge (with complete amnesty if you do have illegal connections).

The Hillsborough MUA would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us at 908-371-9660.
