Grease and Cooking Oil in Drains

Cooking oil being poured down a drain adjacent to a large metal pipe clogged with solidified fats and oils.

There is a misconception that it is ok to pour grease, cooking oil, or animal fat down the drain. It is not okay to pour grease, cooking oil, or animal fat down the drain. While it might seem convenient to let liquid fats flow smoothly into the drain, doing so can lead to several problems such as the following:

  1. Drain Clogs: Grease and oils solidify in drainpipes, forming tough clogs that are difficult to remove. Even seemingly harmless oils like olive oil can become solid when poured down a drainpipe.
  2. Environmental Issues: Pouring grease down the drain can disrupt local sewer systems and septic tanks. It contributes to the formation of fatbergs—large clumps of solid fat that threaten to clog up the entire system.
  3. Health Hazards: The fat stays somewhat soft, making it hard to retrieve from the drain. Additionally, clogged drains can lead to unpleasant odors and potential health risks.

The above picture shows a pipe that is clogged with grease and kitchen oil.

So, what to do with your grease or cooking oil? Allow the cooking oil to cool before disposing of it. You can strain and reuse cooking oils for future meals, but make sure to remove any contaminants first. When it comes to the grease, pour warm grease into a grease jar or can. Use a metal or glass storage container (like a clean metal can or a screw-top jar). Once the container is full, scoop out solid residue before storing it in the fridge for future use. Alternatively, wait for the fat to cool slightly and soak it up using paper towels, which can then be tossed into the garbage.

If you’ve already poured grease down the drain, consider taking preventive steps: run the sink at its maximum temperature, pour a gallon (or more) of boiling water slowly, and add a bit of dish soap for maximum efficacy. Remember, proper disposal helps prevent costly repairs and keeps your plumbing system functioning smoothly!
